Timeless vs. Trendy Interior Design

Effortlessly blending new and old pieces to balance trendy vs. timeless.

Trendy vs. Timeless

Trendy vs. timeless - always the great debate in fashion and also in interior design.

Today we are influenced more than ever with social media and a computer (aka smart phone) constantly in our pocket or purse.

It’s fun to stay on top of trends, but being trendy can have a big impact on the environment. For example, the EPA estimates roughly 9 million tons of furniture are thrown into dumps and landfills every year. (source: architecturaldigest.com.)

Unfortunately, many of these items are relatively new. Often, these trendy pieces aren't made to last. With manufacturers trying to get these pieces to market as fast as possible, they typically lack quality.

You’ll often see trends reflected in rugs, throw pillows, and decor. Again, these items are often tossed when they’re not in style any more.

Beyond the environmental impact of trendy vs. timeless, balancing the two just makes for good design.

At Red Door, we love to mix vintage with new. Often we create new life in older furniture pieces by polishing them, recovering them, or giving them a coat of fresh paint. We love using vintage pieces because it’s not only environmentally friendly, saving them from the landfill, but also because it brings more character and interest into the space.

When considering how to create that balance between timeless and trendy, it’s important to take into account the anchor pieces within a space - items that you’ll have for a long time. For example, when investing in large pieces of furniture, tile, countertops, and flooring, you’ll want to avoid trends so you can keep them for a long time!

Throw pillows and blankets, small pieces of decor, and wallpaper are all examples of pieces that are relatively inexpensive, making them good options for expressing your love of the most recent trend.

And just because something is timeless doesn’t mean it's boring.

You can still create a home that reflects your personal style with timeless anchor pieces mixed with trendy touches here and there.

As always, if you have any questions or feel overwhelmed with the idea of doing this on your own… we are here for you! Our fall schedule is booking up, so now is the time to reach out. Let’s talk about your project!
